How my book critiques work
For each book critique I write an overall critique document which summarises my opinions on and recommendations for the book. The critique is organised into sections that focus on different aspects of the book. I may also include short sections of text from the book to illustrate a point.
Critique may sound like criticism, but that’s not what my service is about. I see it as my role to encourage and inspire writers, so I keep my book critiques constructive and sensitive. I’m honest about the areas I feel need work, but also tell authors what’s good in their writing.
Breaking down the book critique
My book critiquing service includes commenting and offering advice on the following:
Characterisation: Here I address the development of your characters; how real and engaging they are; and any holes or inconsistencies. I also suggest ways to develop characters further.
Genre/readership: I let you know what genre I think the book falls into and what readership it will reach, and I discuss any issues with either.
Plot development: I draw your attention to inconsistencies; discuss issues in pace, movement, time or setting; and suggest improvements.
Readiness: The big one: I let you know honestly whether I think the book will be of interest to agents/publishers. I also give clear advice on what you need to do to ready the text for publication – whether that means submitting the book to agents/publishers, or self-publishing.
Structure: I discuss your overall plot, chapter and part structuring.
Writing style: This may include choice of words; descriptions; sentence and paragraph structure and length; active or passive voice; dialogue; repetition; and spelling, punctuation and grammar. I also give recommendations for copy-editing and proofreading.
Looking at the bigger picture
By its nature, a book critique stands back and looks at the bigger picture of the book: how it works in its entirety. It is, therefore, beyond the scope of my book critiquing service to get stuck into the minutiae of the book and flag up smaller issues such as a tiny inconsistency or a weak plot element.
If I feel your book requires this intensive level of editing, in my book critique I will recommend you consider my development editing service. And if you require support with language style, you can look at my copy-editing and proofreading services.
